William Nylander Benched In Third Period Of Saturdays Game

William Nylander is a great offensive player but if you ask around the thing you will hear most about him is that he doesn’t give a full effort throughout 60 minutes, it’s been an issue that has been displayed by the Leafs winger throughout his career.

When he is good, he is really good. When he is bad, he’s non existent.

Saturday night against the Montreal Canadiens Sheldon Keefe decided it was time to send a message to Nylander by benching him for the final half of the third period. Nylander played just 13:55 last night, his lowest ice time since Dec. 14, 2019.

William Nylander has 14 points in 19 games to start the season but has been struggling recently only recording 2 points in his last 8 games.

Here is what Sheldon Keefe had to say about the benching:

“Both tonight & last game, he’s had a lot of really good stretches where he had good legs & he looks real dangerous like he’s ready to break out … in the 3rd period, we got it going the way we wanted to & I don’t think Willy matched that”

Nylander came out flying and playing great hockey Saturday night but his game quickly tapered off towards the third period. It’s clear the Leafs expect more from Nylander at both ends of the ice for a full 60 minutes, something he will need to improve on.
