Kyle Dubas and co realize they are running out of do-overs with the core they currently have. This has led to the belief that the Leafs GM is currently looking to bring in the best player available that will change the mix of this group a bit.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman had this to say on the Fan 590 today:
Does this not seem like the point where the raptors traded Derozan for Leonard?… I don’t know if they’re going to do something like that this year, but I think they’re running out of chances to go out with this group. That’s why I think they’re looking at the best player available who they can find, who can change the mix a bit.
The Leafs have the cap space to make a big deal this off-season and can clear up more for themselves by moving Morgan Rielly’s $5,000,000 cap hit before his contract expires next year as a UFA. Then they would have nearly $16m of cap space to work with.
There has been talks about bringing in Travis Konecny from the Flyers who is currently signed to a $5,500,000 cap hit. Konecny is just the type of player the Leafs could use, he has a mean streak and plays with a chip on his shoulder while still being able to put up points.
Another name the Leafs have been connected to is Dougie Hamtilon. Hamilton is a UFA, and it doesn’t look like he will be re-signing with Carolina. Hamilton is an excellent puck moving defenceman that can put up numbers. Think of him as Morgan Rielly premium.
Regardless, it will be interesting to see who the Leafs go after and we will be here to break the news to you first.
