The 31 year old center is a former first round pick in the 2013 NHL entry draft, he currently has 7 points in 37 games for the Columbus blue jackets. This seems like a move to recoup some center depth after losing Travis Boyd on waivers to the vancouver canucks.
Riley Nash is currently injured and out for 4-6 weeks, his cap hit of $2,750,000 will go right onto LTIR and extends the Leafs LTIR space for the regular season which means the Leafs now find themselves with even more cap space to make a big move before the deadline.
Before this deal the Leafs had $1.5M in cap space, by acquiring Nash and placing him on LTIR it allows the Leafs to exceed the upper limit of the cap by $2,750,000.
The Leafs also placed Frederik Andersen on LTIR meaning the Leafs can now exceed the cap by $7.5M leaving them with $5.8M in available cap space ahead of the deadline.
Once healthy, Nash will be allowed to join the team in the Playoffs as during the post season the salary cap is null and void.
