Ottawa Senators forward Artem Anisimov’s NHL debut as a goaltender will have to wait.
A series of unfortunate events put this into motion. Ottawa Senators starter Anton Forsberg was injured warming up before the game and goalie Matt Murray was injured during the second period of their game against the Vancouver Canucks sunday evening.
Marcus Hogberg took over in net but the team had no one to back them up and with covid protocol’s the emergency goalie isn’t a thing.
So, the 32 year old forward got dressed in some goalie equipment in the room and was on stand by to actually play if another injury happened. Coach DJ Smith had this to say following the game:
“We had Arty dressed and ready to go. We didn’t have anyone left. A lot of people would think Zack Bierk, the goalie coach played in the NHL but he had three hip surgeries, he’s got a bad ear from a shot in the head as a player so he’s not an option. So we really didn’t have anyone left.”
Anisimov posted some of the images to instagram saying he although he did not get to make his goaltending NHL debut, he was ready. What a story that would have been.
