Yesterday, the Montreal Canadiens cleaned house, firing longtime General Manager Marc Bergevin and co.
In the same breath, the club hired former New York Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton to be the teams executive vice president of hockey operations.
Now, it’s been no secret that the Canadiens are looking for a new General Manager who speaks French to satisfy their francophone fan base, but the new GM may not have the same capabilities as your run-of-the-mill NHL gm.
No, he is going to be more of a show pony that goes out and relays the word of Jeff Gorton, who will play the role of shadow GM.
It’s a bit silly that this has to be done, but that’s Montreal for you.
Dailyfaceoff’s Frank Seravalli had this to say:
Gorton, 53, could be the man at the controls with all of the traditional say and power of an NHL GM, while the subsequent Francophone who is actually hired with that title will gain valuable experience under him in a collaborative role where he is also the franchise’s voice and face en Français to hockey’s most rabid market.
