After acquiring defenseman Ryan Graves from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Mikhail Maltsev and a second-round selection, it seems there will be a surprise player left unprotected in the expansion draft.
That player is 32 year old P.K. Subban. Subban, who is entering the last year of his deal that carries a $9,000,000 cap hit was visually not himself last season with just 19 points in 44 games and was also a less than stellar -16 on the year.
It now appears as though the New Jersey Devils would like to move in a different direction and use his $9,000,000 cap hit to improve other areas of their team.
Here is what sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman had to say:
I think it’s possible, it sounds like they are going (protecting) Severson, Graves and Siegenthale so that would not only leave Subban exposed, it would leave Will Butcher exposed too and a couple of their remianing UFAs.
The Devils are now likely to protect defensemen Damon Severson, Ryan Graves and Jonas Siegenthaler from Seattle in the expansion draft. That would leave P.K. Subban, Will Butcher, Colton White and pending UFAs Ryan Murray and Connor Carrick exposed.
