More teams are continuing to show interest in Nashville Predators blueliner Mattias Ekholm. It’s not hard to see why when you look at the quality of player you are getting on an amazing contract that carries a $3,750,000 cap hit.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman the Predators have named their price for the prized defenseman and it isn’t cheap. Here’s what he said:
“They are looking for a Muzzin kind of package, two prospects and a 1st rounder and someones going to pay that.
Now my question is, who is it going to be? Winnipeg I think is in, Boston is in, I’ve had some questions about whether or not Toronto is in. The thing with Toronto is if you get him, you’ve got three lefties; Rielly, Muzzin and him what are you doing with that? How are you sorting that out?….
The other wild card there is Philly and again, I’ve had people tell me that Philly is going to say they are not going to blow what it’s gonna take to get Ekholm unless they can solve an expansion draft issue at the same time and you know do they really think that this is their year?”
So now it looks like there is going to be a race to see which team can get it done first. The Leafs have been said to be in but as Friedman pointed out they already have their left side stacked out and it wouldn’t make much sense to add more there.
The Bruins are favorites to land Ekholm as they try to plug the wholes left by Zdeno Chara and Tory Krug, they have the prospects and they have the picks to get it done.
Winnipeg is another team pushing heavily to land Ekholm, the only thing giving them pause is having to go through the 14 day quarantine again like they did with the Laine for Dubois deal.
The trade deadline is April 12th and approaching fast, but don’t expect for this deal to take that long to complete.
