Leafs Looking To Clear Up Cap Space To Make Big Splash At Trade Deadline

Reports have come out that the Toronto Maple Leafs are currently in talks with teams like the Chicago Blackhawks and the San Jose Sharks to use one of them as a cap space broker in a trade scenario if one was to arise.

The only reason you would contact these teams that are willing to eat a cap hit for you is if you are targeting a player that carries a substantial cap hit. Despite Frank Serravalli seeming to believe the Leafs are out on him we’re told the Leafs are in fact still very  much asking the Buffalo Sabres about Taylor Hall.

Here is what TSN’s Pierre LeBrun had to say:

Keep an eye on the Toronto Maple Leafs in that regard. I believe the Leafs have held talks with Chicago and San Jose over the past month about using them as a third-party broker in a potential trade scenario if that came to pass.

Hall has a cap hit of $8,000,000, much of which the Sabres would have to retain and if the Leafs are able to free up even more space with a third party broker like Chicago or San Jose they could very easily make a player like Hall fit.
