It looks like former Conn Smythe winner and Dallas Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk could be making his return to the hockey world, taking on the coveted GM position with the Pittsburgh Penguins
On Elliotte Friedman’s 31 thought podcast Monday morning mentions he heard Joe Nieuwendyk is potentially being considered as a replacement for Jim Rutherford.
You know I heard a couple of really interesting names, I heard Joe Nieuwendyk potentially and another name I heard is someone we discussed on fridays podcast, and that is could Jason Karmanos be back in the picture?
Joe Nieuwendyk is a guy thats gone dark for a little bit, I think he was frustrated with the way some things went before. I think he’s a really good person and if he wants to get back in I think the games better when he’s around.
In 2009 Joe Nieuwendyk was named GM of the Dallas Stars, it seems he never had the financial freedom made available to him by then owner Tom Hicks to make the moves he wanted. It’s easy to see why he felt frustrated and went dark for awhile.
There was a lot of controversy around some of the decisions Nieuwendyk made as the stars GM whether it be drafting Scott Glennie with their first round 8th overall pick in the 2009 draft or trading James Neal and Matt Niskanen for Alex Goligoski. But he also had a lot of successes as the stars GM, which you can read more about here.
I’m sure the possibility of being the Penguins GM excites Joe Nieuwendyk especially knowing that the job would not hold the same restrictions he was forced to deal with as the Dallas Stars GM, this will be something to keep an eye on.
