Insider: Winnipeg Jets Looking at Mattias Ekholm

Winnipeg has really turned on the jets following a pretty slow start. It seems the team is starting to figure itself out as they currently sit second in the North Division if you go by point percentage, behind only the Maple Leafs who they are in the middle of a back and forth series with.

Insider Pierre LeBrun seems to think that Jets management believe they have a real shot this year and are going to go out of their way to bolster their roster for a run at the cup. LeBrun says he believes Mattias Ekholm is a perfect fit for the jets who could use some more help on the blueline.

Mattias Ekholm has a year and a half left on his contract at a team friendly $3.75 million AAV and can play anywhere in the Jets top two pairings. Here is what Pierre LeBrun had to say:

Loaded up front and with a Vezina Trophy winner in goal, the Jets scream one more top-four D as a piece to get them over the top. It just so happens that I’ve heard some rumblings the Predators have chatted internally about 24-year-old Jets blueliner Sami Niku, who has struggled to become a mainstay in the Winnipeg lineup but remains a player with more ceiling.

LeBrun does also mention the Bruins as being in on Ekholm so it will be a first come first serve situation to the highest bidder. This trade deadline is going to be fun.
