The 2020-2021 season has gone like many other seasons for the Buffalo Sabres lately, it started with a lot of hope with management bringing in former league MVP Taylor Hall on a one year deal but quickly and similarly to previous seasons fell apart.
Buffalo currently sits dead last in their division with a 4-6-2 record, they struggle to record much offense with their leading scorer being Victor Olofsson with only 5 goals and Taylor Hall has not been the savior Buffalo fans thought he would be, struggling to start the year with just 1 goal in 12 games.
Last summer the idea of trading Jack Eichel came up, he was described as growing restless and tired of losing. Teams called the Sabres and made offers but in the end Sabres management decided it was not something they wanted to pursue at the time.
Well, that time may finally be coming. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on WGR550 today was asked if he sees the possibility of the Sabres trading Jack Eichel, his reply? “Yes.”
“Well here’s the thing, obviously the way the Sabres came back out of the break with two really tough losses has started the talk about what could be happening.
Look we know this was something that came up last summer. And I don’t know that it was ever close. The feeling I’ve always had is that Buffalo knew that Eichel was unhappy. They asked Eichel to take a big step last year and he really did.
We talked about how much of a step that Eichel took last year. And still when it came to team success, it just didn’t really go anywhere. And now you look at where it is this year. You know he’s going to be frustrated. And there were conversations last year.
What I was told was the Sabres just said “we are not ready to do this”. Teams made offers. It was communicated that he was restless. I don’t think he ever asked for a trade. I don’t think he ever asked for a trade but he was restless and teams knew it
And the Sabres took some offers and said we’re not ready to do this.”

He went on to name the New York Rangers and the Los Angeles Kings as teams that could put together a good enough package to make the trade for Jack Eichel.
If things don’t turn around for the Sabres and quick, they may lose their franchise player this off season.
